Opera
Die Liebe Zu Den Drei Orangen
Theatre St. Gallen, Switzerland
Laughter is the best medicine: So the court tries to coax a laugh out of the melancholy prince. This goes horribly wrong, because the evil sorceress, at whom the prince finally laughs, condemns him to the eponymo love of three oranges
Sergei Prokofiev’s crazy opera offers everything you would expect from a fairy tale: kings and wizards, princesses and princes, laughter and tears, curses and redemption. At the same time, the work is a wonderful satire on the theater, because as a framework, representatives of tragedy, comedy and poetry as well as the idiots discuss which genre tells the best story.
SHOWS: 29 SEP 20 OCT 05 NOV
Opera
Ariadne auf Naxos
Rouen Normandy Opera House, France
A true masterpiece with fine and sublime chamber orchestration, Ariadne auf Naxos is the illustration of an ambitious project: to bring together in a single work an opera mixing seriousness and comedy; on the one hand, a burlesque farce performed by a troupe of the commedia dell’arte and on the other hand, the opera seria of a young composer inspired by the myth of Ariadne. The impressive contrast of oppositions between the different characters, carried as much by the music as by the text, contributes to the subtle balance of genres for a captivating show from beginning to end.

Operetta
Die Fledermaus
Festspielhouse Baden-Baden, Germany
“Die Fledermaus” with Marc Minkowski and Les Musiciens du Louvre – this promises the best of both worlds: from Vienna the magnificent melodies of “Waltz King” Johann Strauss, from Paris the esprit that brings them up to speed. Because nothing about this operetta masterpiece is sluggish: the music and plot take turns – that’s why it needs an ensemble like the Musiciens du Louvre, who follow every wink of their founder Minkowski. No feeling (and there are many of them in arias that would be worthy of a great opera) lasts longer than a few beautiful moments before it is riddled with bursts of laughter. The focus of “Die Fledermaus” is the great masked party at Prince Orlofsky’s. Everyone is fooling everyone else, there is celebration, laughter, flirting – and love? And yes! Not necessarily your own husband, but certainly life.
