Operetta
Die Fledermaus
Theater an der Wien
On 5 April, 1874, on what is now Linke Wienzeile, the curtain rose on a world premiere that was to change the genre of operetta, the life of composer Johann Strauss and consequently the history of the Theater an der Wien forever. Die Fledermaus delighted in erasing all boundaries: the distinctions between light theatre and grand opera, entertainment and serious music, fantasy and reality, magnificent balls and rowdy gaols, aristocrats and servants were all washed away by champagne. Although hugely popular all over the world, Die Fledermaus remains a work that belongs to Vienna more than any other. It was included on programmes under every conceivable circumstance, since the gaiety of the waltz also helps to sweep the occasional misdeed under the carpet … The MusikTheater an der Wien is not about to let the 200th birthday of Johann Strauss pass without celebrating the “king of all operettas” with a new production. And just as at the world premiere, the theatre’s director is again involved in an artistic capacity: a good 150 years ago, director Marie Geistinger starred as Rosalinde, while today it is her latest successor in that role, Stefan Herheim, who directs the production.

La Boheme
Konzert und Theater St. Gallen
The scenes from the life of the Bohemians, as the literary original by Henri Murger is titled, were condensed into a plot in the opera version by Puccini’s librettists Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giocosa, which usually leaves no eye dry. The tragic love between the seamstress Mimi and the poet Rodolfo moves with its naivety and hopelessness. Because, as the piece describes, the path out of the Bohemia either leads to moral corruption or straight to the morgue. Self-realization, the absoluteness of beliefs and emotions, morality and its definition, hedonism, love, jealousy, illness, and death – these are all themes that still accompany young people on their journey today.
After the great successes of The Magic Flute, Die Fledermaus, and Hansel and Gretel, the Concert and Theater St. Gallen is bringing a new production to the stage by director Guta Rau, who knows how to captivate with her engaging productions. At the podium of the St. Gallen Symphony Orchestra stands chief conductor Modestas Pitrenas.

“Riccardo Muti Italian Opera Academy” is a training program for young musicians led by Maestro Riccardo Muti, this year dedicated to Don Giovanni by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
From November 19 to 30, the public will be able to attend the full program of lessons, rehearsals, and concerts held at the Deposito, located at the Milan headquarters of Fondazione Prada.
Riccardo Muti has always shared with young students the knowledge he inherited from his great mentors in the interpretative process of opera. At the helm of the Luigi Cherubini Youth Orchestra, the Maestro embarks each year on a training journey with young conductors and répétiteurs selected through an international call, aged between 18 and 35.
The 2025 edition opens on November 19 with a lecture-concert by Riccardo Muti on Don Giovanni. It continues from November 20 to 26 with public rehearsals led by the Maestro, during which the young conductors and répétiteurs direct and accompany the orchestra, chorus, and singers in the execution of the opera. The project concludes with two key events: on November 27, the final rehearsal of the young conductors presented by Riccardo Muti, and on Sunday, November 30, the performance of Don Giovanni conducted by the Maestro.
Riccardo Muti Music (RMMUSIC) conceived and launched the “Riccardo Muti Italian Opera Academy” in 2015 and has overseen its organization in Italy and abroad. In Japan, the project has been presented since 2019 in collaboration with the Tokyo Spring Festival. In 2024, the first edition was held in Suzhou, China, in collaboration with Vancy Culture Beijing.

Operetta
Die Fledermaus
HNK Zagreb
A comical operetta in three acts The Bat / Die Fledermaus, a praised work of Johann Strauss the younger had its world opening night in 1874 in Vienna, immediately becoming a synonym of the operetta genre. In only six years, the operetta was staged in more than 170 theatres in the German-speaking regions, and this clearly illustrates its great popularity. Many consider it the operetta of all operettas. Gustav Mahler proclaimed it the best comic opera and it was also praised by Franz Liszt, Richard Wagner, Johannes Brahms, Arturo Toscanini, Herbert von Karajan, Leonard Bernstein and many other great artists. The libretto was written by Richard Genée and Karl Haffner after the burlesque The Prison by Julius Roderich Benedix and vaudeville piece Le Révellion by Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy. Emerging from the theatre vaudeville burlesque it had all the features, primarily orchestral and vocal of a comic opera from the time of Mozart and Rossini. Uniting the Parisian tendency for parody with Viennese charm that was never sentimental, Strauss created a work that after the staging of Max Reinhardt on the stage of the Berlin Opera in 1928 became a rightful part of the opera repertoire around the world. The Bat returns in great style to the largest Zagreb theatre stage during Christmas and New Year’s holidays. The conductor is Srba Dinić and stage director Krešimir Dolenčić.

Tristan und Isolde
In Tristan und Isolde, Richard Wagner translates desire into music in a way that had never been heard before. He uses endless melodies and tension-filled harmonies that seem to be in constant search of resolution. In this way, he draws listeners into a musical whirlwind, culminating in Isolde’s famous ‘Liebestod’. Conductor Tarmo Peltokoski, a rising star in the opera world, leads the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, where he is principal guest conductor. It was Wagner’s music that first inspired Peltokoski to become a conductor. Despite his young age—he was born in 2000—he has already built a reputation with several highly acclaimed Wagner performances. His interpretation of Tristan und Isolde promises to be an unforgettable musical experience.
